Solve the Mystery of a Hidden Water Leak Through These Tips

Since most parts of the typical home’s plumbing system are out of sight, a leaking pipe may go unnoticed, especially if subtle signs of leakage are ignored.

Homeowners may need to know what to look for regarding leak detection. If anyone in a household notices the indicators outlined in the following paragraphs, they may want to consider calling a plumbing pro for water leak repair.

Examine High Water Bills

billsSometimes, people know when their water bill is going to spike. A dry summer when lawns and gardens need watering or children play daily in the hose is a good example. When an unexpected rise in the water bill happens, there is cause for concern that a leak is present. Sometimes leaks are well hidden and are first noticed because of increased cost.

Look for Other Evidence of a Leak

Though the skyrocketing water bill will shock the system, it will likely not be the only indicator that can be pinpointed for leak detection. The list below explains some of the other signs or evidence of a leak.

  • Extra Grass or Plant Growth: If there is a strip of much greener grass on the lawn or a particularly fertile patch of garden, there may be a supply line or a sewer pipe underneath that gives that area some extra nourishment through a leak.
  • Low Water Pressure: Low water pressure throughout the house and for an extended period may indicate a need for leak repair in the supply lines.
  • Standing Water: If water is collecting in the yard or on the floor, there is likely a water leak somewhere.
  • Water Damage: This can include structural damage to drywall or studs, excessive mold, and mildew growth. If the mold growth is in an odd place, it could be due to a leak.

Before a homeowner calls the local plumbing company, they should perform one last test to see if there is a leak: the water meter test.

Watch the Water Meter for Confirmation

water meter Using the water meter is a fast and easy way to check for a major leak. Here are the steps.

  1. Turn off all water in the house, including appliances such as the washing machine and dishwasher.
  2. Find the water meter. It is usually under an access cover in the yard.
  3. Watch and read the water meter to see if the numbers change or if there is other evidence of water flowing.
  4. There’s a leak if water flows, and the homeowner should call a plumber as soon as possible.

If there is a leak and no one needs to use water, the homeowner should turn off the water at the main valve until a plumbing tech can look at it.
